Hidden Valley – A Fun Adventure on South Mountain
Hidden Valley Trail, located in Phoenix's South Mountain Park and Preserve, offers a unique hiking experience with fascinating rock formations, narrow passages, and panoramic views of the city. This hike combines moderate elevation gain with natural wonders, making it a favorite among locals and other visitors.
Overview
The 3.7-mile Hidden Valley Loop Trail begins at the Mormon Trailhead and follows the Mormon Trail for approximately 1.2 miles before intersecting with the National Trail. From there, hikers can do a loop to encounter two exceptionally fun areas that are hidden gems in Hidden Valley. One is the narrow Fat Man's Pass, and the other is the impressive Natural Tunnel. Although the area is on the edge of Phoenix, it feels at times like a quiet, remote destination far from civilization.

The Journey
When starting at the Mormon Trailhead, the hike begins with a steep ascent, gaining about 700 feet over the first 1.2 miles. The trail is rocky and uneven, requiring careful footing. This is the all-uphill portion, but there are plenty of places to stop and rest. Upon reaching the National Trail, hikers can choose their direction:- Counterclockwise (recommended): Turn right onto the National Trail, then left onto Hidden Valley Trail to experience Fat Man's Pass first. This direction is recommended for climbing and sliding down smooth rock and boulders later in the loop, rather than climbing up them.
- Clockwise: Turn left onto the National Trail, then right onto Hidden Valley Trail to encounter the Natural Tunnel first.
Fat Man's Pass is a narrow rock crevice approximately 15-20 feet long, with the tightest point being only 12-18 inches wide. Hikers may need to remove backpacks to squeeze through. Alternatively, one can climb over the boulders or slide down the smooth rock surfaces, which have become slick from frequent use.

After passing through Fat Man's Pass, the trail meanders through Hidden Valley, a secluded area surrounded by boulders. The path continues to the Natural Tunnel, a 40-foot-long rock formation that provides a cool and shaded passage. Beyond the tunnel, the trail reconnects with the National Trail, where hikers can choose to turn left to return to the trailhead or retrace their steps through the tunnel.
